Canada-US Trade Tensions: What the PM’s Strong Response Means
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged a “very strong” response if U.S. President Donald Trump proceeds with imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, a measure that could take effect as early as February 1, 2025.
Trudeau emphasized Canada’s readiness to support American economic prosperity but cautioned against the imposition of tariffs, asserting Ottawa’s intent to retaliate if necessary.
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep economic ties between the two nations, noting that goods worth $3.6 billion cross the border daily.
He also pointed out that Canada’s resources are essential for the American economy’s growth and prosperity.
In response to the potential tariffs, Trudeau indicated that Canada is prepared to implement retaliatory measures, including dollar-for-dollar matching tariffs on U.S. goods.
He also mentioned that less than 1% of fentanyl and illegal immigrants entering the U.S. originate from Canada, highlighting Canada’s significant investment in border security improvements.
