Decolonisation in Action: Belize’s Dollar Note Transformation
Belize has announced plans to replace the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II on its banknotes with portraits of national heroes, marking a significant move in its decolonization efforts. The new designs will feature George Cadle Price, Belize’s first prime minister and a key figure in achieving independence, and Philip Goldson, a prominent political leader and advocate for national pride. These redesigned banknotes are scheduled to enter circulation in June 2025.
Prime Minister Johnny BriceƱo emphasized that this change honors Belize’s cultural heritage and acknowledges the contributions of those who led the nation to independence.
He stated, “Each time we look at the faces of our national heroes on our new currency, we are seeing history, we are seeing leadership, we are seeing the great work that led us to where we are today.”
The decision has elicited mixed reactions from the public. Some individuals question the necessity of the redesign, while others express concerns about potential impacts on the value of the Belize dollar.
However, Central Bank Governor Kareem Michael assured citizens that the value of the currency would remain unchanged, stating, “Today one U.S. dollar is equivalent to two Belizean dollars. This will not change.”
This initiative aligns Belize with other Commonwealth countries that have moved away from featuring British monarchs on their currency, reflecting a broader trend toward recognizing national identities and heroes.
Political scientist Dr. Dylan Vernon described the removal of the queen’s image as “a small but significant symbolic step in the unfinished business of decolonization,” while also advocating for further constitutional and political reforms to achieve more meaningful progress.
The redesigned banknotes will also incorporate enhanced security features and showcase various aspects of Belize’s natural and cultural heritage. For instance, the new $100 note will highlight the country’s marine attractions, including the Queen Triggerfish and the Great Blue Hole, alongside a portrait of George Cadle Price.
