Breaking News: President Yoon Faces Indictment Over Martial Law in South Korea
South Korean prosecutors have formally indicted President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of insurrection following his brief imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024. The martial law declaration, which lasted only six hours, aimed to suspend civilian rule and was intended to prohibit political and parliamentary activities and control the media.
This move led to significant political turmoil, culminating in Yoon’s impeachment and subsequent arrest on January 15, 2025.
If convicted, Yoon faces severe penalties, including the possibility of life imprisonment or even the death penalty. The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to formally remove him from office or reinstate his presidential powers, with a decision expected within 180 days. Should the court confirm his removal, a presidential election must be held within 60 days.
Yoon’s arrest and indictment have deepened political divisions within South Korea, evoking memories of past authoritarian regimes. His supporters have staged protests, some of which have turned violent, including an incident where they stormed the Seoul Western District Court following an extension of his detention.
