Unpacking the PSC’s Role in the IGP’s Retirement Process
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has clarified that it lacks the constitutional authority to determine the appointment or retirement of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
This clarification comes amid inquiries following the PSC’s recent directive for police officers exceeding 60 years of age or 35 years of service to proceed on immediate retirement.
In a statement released on February 3, 2025, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani emphasized that the Commission’s mandate does not extend to the IGP, who is appointed by the President upon the advice of the Police Council.
Ani stated, “The law is clear on the mandate of the Commission, and it does not extend to the Inspector-General of Police, who is an appointee of Mr. President with the advice of the Police Council.”
