Borno IDP Camp Fire: 7-Year-Old Boy Loses Life
On March 20, 2025, a tragic fire broke out at the Munna Albadawi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old boy named Abubakar Gargar. The blaze, which started around 3:00 a.m., destroyed ten makeshift shelters and consumed personal belongings, including foodstuffs and clothing.
The Borno State Fire Service, in collaboration with security agencies, managed to contain the fire, but not before significant damage had occurred. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other humanitarian organizations have dispatched officials to assess the destruction and provide necessary assistance to the affected individuals.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of fires in IDP camps within Borno State. In March 2024, separate fires in other camps resulted in the deaths of a 2-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. Additionally, in November 2020, a fire in an IDP camp led to the deaths of five children and displaced thousands of residents.
These recurring tragedies highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures and living conditions in IDP camps to protect vulnerable populations from such disasters.
