Niger Delta Congress Spokesperson Engaged by Police Amid Protests
The Nigeria Police Force has detained Saatah Nubari, President of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), in connection with the group’s planned protest against President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Nubari was arrested on March 25, 2025, in Port Harcourt and is currently held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Rivers State.
Prior to Nubari’s detention, the police had extended invitations to Mudiaga Ogboru, the NDC’s spokesperson, following his public criticism of the emergency rule and his calls for Niger Delta residents to exercise their civil rights through protests. Ogboru reported receiving separate invitations from both the Lagos and Rivers State Police Commands. In his absence, authorities proceeded to arrest Nubari.
The declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, announced by President Tinubu on March 18, 2025, involved the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected State Assembly members. A sole administrator was appointed to govern the state for six months. This action was taken in response to escalating political tensions and incidents of pipeline vandalism in the region.
The NDC and other groups have voiced strong opposition to the emergency rule, viewing it as a violation of democratic principles. The Nigerians in Diaspora Association (NDA-USA) labeled the move a “war against Nigerians and the international community,” criticizing the suspension of elected officials and the appointment of an unelected administrator.
The detention of Nubari has raised concerns about the government’s approach to dissent and the right to peaceful protest.
