Sallah Stampede in Gombe: Tragic Loss of Two Children

Gombe Eid Ground Stampede: 20 Injured, Two Lives Lost

A tragic stampede occurred on Sunday at the main Eid prayer ground in Gombe State, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to 20 others. The incident took place around 10:45 a.m. at the exit gate of the Eid ground, immediately following the conclusion of Eid prayers.

According to the Gombe State Police Command, the stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue. The situation was exacerbated by intense heat, leading to panic and overcrowding.

The two deceased children have been identified as Aisha Salisu Ahmed, aged four, and Maryam Abdullahi Gwani, also aged four. They were pronounced dead by doctors while receiving treatment.

In response to the tragedy, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede, with the aim of preventing future occurrences. He also announced that the state government would cover all medical expenses for the injured victims to ensure their recovery and well-being.

The Gombe State Police Command has advised Eid ground managers to ensure that all entrance and exit gates remain open to facilitate smooth movement, especially after prayers, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
