Dogara on tax reforms in Nigeria
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has stressed that transparency and effective implementation are key to the success of Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms.
Dogara made the remarks while addressing stakeholders at a fiscal policy forum in Abuja. He noted that while tax reforms are necessary to boost government revenue and reduce dependence on oil, they will fail without accountability and clear implementation frameworks.
According to him, Nigerians are more likely to comply with tax policies if they see evidence that revenues are being used to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and education. He urged policymakers to ensure that reforms do not overburden citizens already struggling with economic hardship.
Dogara also emphasized the importance of broadening the tax base by capturing the informal sector, while simplifying tax processes to encourage voluntary compliance. He warned against multiple taxation, which he described as harmful to businesses and investors.
Stakeholders at the event echoed his call, urging the government to adopt global best practices and strengthen institutions responsible for tax administration.
