NDLEA Arrests Three Suspects, Destroys 125,750kg of Cannabis in Ekiti
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of three suspects and the destruction of over 125,750 kilograms of cannabis sativa during a major raid on drug cultivation sites in Ekiti State.
In a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the operation was carried out over the weekend as part of an intensified nationwide effort to curb drug cultivation, trafficking, and abuse.
According to the NDLEA, the operation followed weeks of surveillance on remote farmlands in Efon, Irele, and Ikere local government areas, where officers uncovered and destroyed several large cannabis plantations covering dozens of hectares.
“Our operatives stormed the identified locations and seized over 125,750 kilograms of harvested cannabis, while three suspects were arrested during the simultaneous raids,” the statement read.
Babafemi noted that the agency also recovered equipment used for processing and packaging the illegal substance, including weighing scales, sacks, and fertilizers. He added that the suspects are currently being interrogated and will be charged to court after investigations.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, reiterating the agency’s determination to dismantle drug syndicates and eliminate illicit plantations across the country.
“We are determined to make drug cultivation and trafficking unprofitable. The destruction of these cannabis farms sends a strong message that there is no hiding place for drug cartels,” Marwa said.
He also urged communities to collaborate with NDLEA officers by providing timely intelligence to help identify and disrupt similar operations in their areas.
The recent success in Ekiti adds to a growing list of NDLEA’s nationwide seizures, reflecting the agency’s ongoing campaign to reduce the availability of illicit substances and promote public health and safety.
