Tinubu, Obasanjo Lead Dignitaries to Honour Late Christopher Kolade
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo led an array of prominent Nigerians at the state memorial service held in honour of Ambassador Christopher Kolade, the veteran broadcaster, diplomat, and former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
The event, held at the Muson Centre in Lagos, brought together political leaders, business executives, clergy, and members of the diplomatic corps, all paying tribute to a man widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest public servants and moral icons.
In his tribute, President Tinubu described Kolade as a “beacon of integrity, discipline, and excellence”, recalling his outstanding contributions to nation-building through media, diplomacy, and corporate leadership.
“Ambassador Kolade embodied the very best of Nigerian values — honesty, humility, and service to humanity. His life remains a guiding light for future generations,” Tinubu said in a message delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Former President Obasanjo also eulogised Kolade as “a man of uncommon decency and patriotism”, noting that he played pivotal roles in public administration, ethics reform, and education during and after his service years.
Other dignitaries present included Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), business mogul Aliko Dangote, and Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who offered special prayers for the deceased’s family.
Kolade, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 92, was a distinguished diplomat, former chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, and one of the founding figures of Nigeria’s broadcasting and public relations landscape.
The memorial was marked by musical tributes, reflections on his legacy, and a renewed call for Nigerian leaders to emulate his lifelong commitment to honesty and nation-building.
