Anambra Woman Murder: Man Arrested After Ex-Girlfriend’s Body Is Found in Sack

Anambra Woman Murder: Police Arrest Man Over Death of Ex-Girlfriend
Police in Anambra State have arrested a man identified as Chima Ofoeke over the alleged murder of his former girlfriend, 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini. The young woman was reported missing on October 16, 2026, before her remains were later discovered in a sack in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary questioning that he killed the woman after their relationship ended. He also reportedly led detectives to the location where her remains were recovered.
The case has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stronger action against violence in relationships.
Anambra Police Confirm Suspect’s Arrest
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday, October 24.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga said the investigation began after the victim’s mother reported her daughter missing to the Divisional Police Officer in Umuchu.
The mother reportedly told police that she had been unable to establish her daughter’s whereabouts since October 16, despite efforts to locate her.
Following the report, police operatives worked with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga to investigate the disappearance.
The operation led to the arrest of Ofoeke, whom police identified as the deceased woman’s alleged former boyfriend.
Authorities said the suspect was taken in for questioning as investigators worked to establish what happened to the missing woman.
Suspect Allegedly Confesses During Questioning
According to the police statement, Ofoeke allegedly admitted during preliminary interrogation that he killed Umeorini following the breakdown of their relationship.
Police said he subsequently led detectives to the location where her remains were found.
Reports from local media identified the recovery site as Unubi in Nnewi South Local Government Area. The remains were reportedly found inside a sack near the Okigwe-Oba Expressway.
A video circulating online appears to show the suspect being questioned by security operatives following his arrest. Reports said he described how he allegedly killed the woman and disposed of her remains.
The claims form part of the ongoing investigation. The suspect’s allegations have not been tested in court, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
Police Order Further Investigation
Anambra State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.
The transfer is intended to support a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Detectives are expected to examine the available evidence and establish the sequence of events leading to the incident.
Police have also urged members of the public to report missing-person cases and suspicious activities promptly. Authorities said further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
The command has not announced a final conclusion in the case.
Incident Raises Concern About Relationship Violence
The death has prompted renewed discussions about violence against women and the risks associated with controlling behaviour in relationships.
Ending a relationship is a personal choice, and rejection does not justify threats, intimidation or violence. Advocates often urge people to take threats seriously, particularly when a partner refuses to accept a breakup or attempts to control another person’s movements.
Family members and friends can play an important role by listening to concerns and helping someone seek support when they feel unsafe.
Anyone facing immediate danger should contact local emergency services or the police and seek help from trusted people where possible.
Community Awaits Justice
The incident has left residents concerned as investigators work to establish the full circumstances of Umeorini’s death.
Her mother’s missing-person report helped bring the case to the attention of the authorities. The subsequent arrest and recovery of the woman’s remains have now placed the investigation at a critical stage.
Police have promised a thorough inquiry, while the public awaits further details.
For now, the Anambra State Police Command has urged the public to allow investigators to carry out their work as the case proceeds.
