Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has called on former US President Donald Trump to back Nigeria’s designation of the Christian Pentecostal Church (CPC) with tangible measures rather than symbolic statements. The bishop made the appeal while testifying before a U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa, citing the increasing attacks and persecution faced by Christians in Nigeria.
During his testimony, Bishop Anagbe stressed that while political recognition of the CPC is important, it must be accompanied by concrete support to protect communities under threat. He highlighted that Christians, particularly in the Middle Belt, are facing kidnappings, killings, and destruction of properties, and that international advocacy alone is insufficient without practical interventions.
The bishop urged the subcommittee to consider strategies that go beyond designations, including assistance for security reforms, humanitarian support, and measures to ensure accountability for perpetrators of violence. He also noted that Nigeria’s government must do more to safeguard citizens, and international partners should encourage and assist in these efforts.
Bishop Anagbe’s statements underscore growing concern over the safety of Christians in Nigeria and reflect calls for stronger international engagement that produces measurable outcomes rather than symbolic gestures.
