Ondo NSCDC officer killed by mentally ill youth
A tragic incident has unfolded in Ondo State, where a mentally unstable 19-year-old young man fatally stabbed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer. The event happened in the Oba-Ile community in Akure North Local Government Area, following a call from the boy’s mother who said she could no longer manage her son’s violent outbursts.
According to eyewitnesses, the mother invited two NSCDC personnel to help restrain her son, hoping to take him to a psychiatric facility. While attempting to chain him, the officers were overpowered. The teenager reportedly grabbed one officer’s knife and stabbed him repeatedly.
The injured NSCDC officer was rushed to a hospital but later died from his wounds. The NSCDC’s state spokesperson said the intervention was meant to protect both the youngster and the community, but it tragically escalated into violence.
DSP Olushola Ayanlade, from the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed that the suspect has a long history of mental instability. Authorities say the case raises urgent questions about mental health support and how to safely manage individuals who pose a risk to themselves and others.
