Ivory Coast Legend Yaya Touré Names Super Eagles the Most Impressive Team of AFCON 2025
Ivorian football legend and former Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Touré, has described the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the most impressive team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Touré made the remarks during a post-tournament analysis, commending the Nigerian squad for their exceptional performance, tactical discipline, and resilience throughout the competition.
Although Nigeria finished third in the tournament, many analysts and fans agree that the Super Eagles displayed some of the strongest football seen in recent AFCON history—an assessment Touré strongly echoed.
Speaking during a media segment reviewing AFCON 2025, Touré noted that Nigeria maintained a level of quality that stood out from the rest of the field.
“For me, the Super Eagles were the most impressive team in this year’s AFCON,” he said.
“They played with power, discipline, and confidence. Even when they were under pressure, they remained organized and dangerous.”
Touré highlighted Nigeria’s defensive structure, midfield balance, and physical presence as key strengths, adding that their performance could serve as a blueprint for emerging African teams.
The Ivorian icon also singled out several of Nigeria’s younger players, stating that the team’s blend of experience and youth was one of the best in the tournament.
“You can see the future in this squad,” he said. “Some of their young players showed maturity beyond their years. Nigeria is building something special.”
Touré, known for his own leadership and midfield dominance in his playing days, praised the composure and technical ability displayed by the team’s rising stars.
Despite not making the final, the Super Eagles earned global respect for their performance, consistency, and tactical sharpness.
Nigeria defeated several strong contenders on their way to securing third place, including some of the tournament favorites.
Analysts say the team’s showing has rekindled hope among Nigerian fans who have long awaited a return to continental dominance.
A spokesperson for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcomed Touré’s remarks, saying they reflect the hard work and dedication of the players and coaching staff.
“Yaya Touré is one of Africa’s greatest football figures. For him to recognize the Super Eagles in this way means a lot,” the official said.
“We will use this as motivation to build even stronger ahead of future tournaments.”
AFCON 2025 was filled with unpredictable outcomes, dramatic matches, and strong individual performances.
While Nigeria did not lift the trophy, many experts agree that the team displayed one of the most organized and exciting football styles in the competition.
Touré concluded his comments by emphasizing the need for African countries to continue investing in coaching, youth development, and infrastructure, noting that success at tournaments like AFCON reflects deeper long-term planning.
“African football is improving, and Nigeria is one of the nations leading that progress,” he added.
