Police Bust “One-Chance” Kidnap Syndicate, Uncover Ritual Shrine in Lagos.
Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of 13 suspected members of a notorious one-chance and kidnapping syndicate, in a major breakthrough that has shocked residents across the state. The arrests were made during a coordinated operation that also led officers to a secret shrine believed to have been used by the gang to conduct ritual practices, oath-taking, and intimidation rituals on abducted victims.
The syndicate, known for terrorising commuters along major highways and inner-city roads, reportedly specialised in robbery, forced ATM withdrawals, kidnapping for ransom, and psychological coercion.
According to police investigations, the group operated using commercial vehicles modified to trap unsuspecting passengers. Victims were:
- Picked up at bus stops
- Robbed of cash, phones, and valuables
- Forced to reveal ATM PINs
- Sometimes detained and transferred to safe houses for ransom payments
Authorities revealed that the gang’s operations were carefully coordinated, with different members assigned roles such as drivers, “passenger” accomplices, ATM escorts, and watchers.
During the operation, detectives uncovered a shrine hidden deep within a compound believed to be owned or rented by one of the gang leaders. Inside the shrine, police reportedly found:
- Fetish materials
- Items belonging to victims
- Blood-stained cloths
- Charms used for intimidation and psychological control
- Books suspected to contain records of victims and ransom collections
Police say the shrine played a central role in maintaining obedience within the group and instilling fear in kidnapped victims who were forced to take oaths of silence.
The spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command confirmed the arrests and seizure of the shrine, calling the operation one of the most significant breakthroughs against criminal syndicates in the state this year.
He said:
“These individuals have operated for far too long, causing fear and panic among commuters. Their arrest is a major step in dismantling networks involved in one-chance robberies and kidnappings.”
He added that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected, as several gang members are believed to still be at large.
Dozens of victims have reportedly come forward to identify the arrested suspects. Some described harrowing experiences of being:
- Threatened with knives and charms
- Driven to remote locations late at night
- Forced to withdraw large sums from ATMs
- Held captive for hours until their bank accounts were emptied
Victims also identified personal belongings recovered from the shrine.
The arrests have drawn reactions from Lagos residents, many of whom say the one-chance menace has been a fear-inducing ordeal for years.
While praising the police, some commuters have called for:
- Increased night patrols
- Stricter regulation of commercial vehicles
- Surveillance in hotspots known for one-chance operations
Authorities confirmed that the 13 suspects will face charges including:
- Kidnapping
- Armed robbery
- Conspiracy
- Unlawful possession of charms
- Operating an unregistered shrine
- Assault and extortion
They will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
The Lagos Police Command says it is intensifying efforts to identify and dismantle other criminal groups operating in the metropolis. The discovery of the shrine, alongside the arrest of the 13 syndicate members, marks a significant step in restoring public confidence and safety for commuters across the state.
