Truck Overturns on Otedola Bridge, Causing Major Accident and Severe Gridlock
A major traffic crisis unfolded in Lagos on Monday after a truck overturned on the busy Otedola Bridge, causing an accident that resulted in hours-long gridlock along the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway corridor.
Witnesses said the truck, reportedly carrying commercial goods, lost control while navigating the incline on the bridge and flipped onto its side, obstructing multiple lanes. The sudden obstruction forced vehicles to a halt, leaving commuters stranded for an extended period.
Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), police officers, and rescue teams, were deployed to the scene to manage the situation. Authorities worked to divert traffic and remove the damaged vehicle, but the gridlock persisted for several hours due to the volume of cars already stuck on the route.
“There was no movement for long stretches,” one commuter said while expressing frustration. “People were stepping out of their vehicles to check what was happening because the traffic wasn’t moving at all.”
No fatalities had been confirmed as of the time of reporting, although authorities said assessments were ongoing to determine the extent of injuries and property damage. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes pending full clearance of the obstruction.
The Otedola Bridge, known for several high-profile accidents over the years, remains one of Lagos’ most traffic-prone hotspots. Safety experts continue to call for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspections and better monitoring of heavy-duty trucks to prevent similar incidents.
Officials have assured that normal traffic flow will be restored once the truck is safely evacuated and the affected section of the bridge is cleared of debris.
