‘My Family’s Marriage List Is Blocking My Future’ — Benue Woman Appeals as Relatives Demand Over N2m From Suitor
A young woman from Benue State has taken to social media to cry out for help after claiming that her family is demanding items worth over ₦2 million from her suitor as part of her traditional marriage requirements. The lady, whose identity remains undisclosed, said the costly list has become a major obstacle preventing her from settling down with the man she wishes to marry.
In an emotional account shared online, she explained that her suitor had expressed readiness to proceed with the marriage rites but became discouraged after receiving the extensive list of items and financial demands from her family. According to her, the list included cash payments, livestock, drinks, clothing materials, and several ceremonial items that significantly exceed the couple’s financial capacity.
She said the suitor complained that the family’s expectations were unrealistic and far above what an average working-class man in Nigeria can afford. The situation, she added, has strained their relationship and placed her future at risk.
The woman appealed to cultural leaders, elders, and the general public to intervene, arguing that excessive bride price demands have trapped many young women in similar situations. She noted that while traditional marriage rites hold cultural significance, the financial burden should not be so high that it prevents willing couples from getting married.
Her story quickly gained traction on social media, sparking widespread debate about the rising cost of traditional marriage lists in several Nigerian communities. Many commenters sympathized with her, saying families should consider the economic realities facing young people. Some argued that demanding millions from suitors has turned marriage into a transactional affair rather than a union based on love and commitment.
