APC Governors Unfazed by Impeachment Moves Against Rivers Governor Fubara — Sule
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are not worried about the ongoing impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, according to the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule.
Sule made the statement while speaking on a television current affairs programme, where he addressed questions on whether APC governors were anxious about the political developments in Rivers State and if the ruling party was taking steps to prevent Fubara’s possible removal from office.
The Nasarawa governor said the impeachment process is a legal matter already before the courts and must be guided strictly by the provisions of the law and due process. He stressed that no governor can be removed arbitrarily without following constitutional procedures.
“I’m not worried because I think it’s an issue of the court. You don’t just wake up and impeach somebody without going through due process,” Sule said. He added that while governors are naturally concerned about developments affecting their colleagues, there is no reason for alarm over the Rivers situation.
According to him, actions already taken by the judiciary and the Rivers State Chief Judge show that the matter is being handled within the bounds of the law. He noted that court rulings and procedural steps have effectively stalled the impeachment process for now.
The latest attempt to impeach Governor Fubara has faced legal and procedural obstacles. A Rivers State High Court recently adjourned the case indefinitely, ruling that pending appeals must first be determined by the Court of Appeal. In addition, the Chief Judge of Rivers State declined to set up an investigative panel, citing existing court orders and the principle that courts should not act on matters already under judicial consideration.
This is the third impeachment attempt against Fubara in less than three years. The most recent move, initiated by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, accuses the governor of gross misconduct, including failure to present appropriation bills, alleged unauthorised spending of public funds, and other constitutional breaches.
The impeachment efforts are widely seen as part of the prolonged political rivalry between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Despite earlier reconciliation efforts, tensions between both camps have continued to shape the political landscape in Rivers State.
Sule also clarified that internal party issues in Rivers State are primarily the responsibility of the APC leadership rather than the Progressive Governors’ Forum. He explained that the party’s national organs have been asked to study the situation and report back if any intervention is required.
Governor Fubara has repeatedly called for calm amid the crisis, expressing confidence that the legal process will prevail. He has maintained that his administration remains focused on governance and service delivery despite the political challenges.
As the legal battles continue, the impeachment move against the Rivers governor remains in limbo, with APC governors insisting they are not losing sleep over the outcome and will allow the courts and constitutional processes to take their course.
