Police Rescue Suspected “One-Chance” Robbers From Lynching by Angry Mob in Abuja
Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have rescued suspected “one-chance” robbers from an angry mob after the suspects were allegedly caught during an attempted robbery operation.
The incident occurred in one of the busy parts of the nation’s capital when residents reportedly raised an alarm after suspecting that occupants of a vehicle were part of a “one-chance” syndicate. “One-chance” is a local term used to describe criminals who disguise themselves as commercial drivers or passengers to rob unsuspecting commuters.
Eyewitnesses said the suspects were intercepted by members of the public after a victim cried out for help. This quickly drew the attention of passersby and residents in the area, leading to a mob attack on the suspects. Some of the individuals were reportedly beaten before security operatives arrived at the scene.
Police officers who responded promptly were able to disperse the crowd and rescue the suspects from further harm. The suspects were immediately taken into custody and transported to a police facility for investigation, while normalcy was restored in the area.
Sources within the police confirmed that preliminary investigations had commenced to determine the level of involvement of the suspects in the alleged crime. Items suspected to have been used for criminal activities were also recovered from the scene, although details were not immediately disclosed.
The police condemned acts of mob justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands. According to the authorities, while public vigilance is important in tackling crime, suspects should always be handed over to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
