Court Remands 21-Year-Old Man for Alleged Attempted Rape of 70-Year-Old Woman in Ondo
A 21-year-old man has been remanded in a correctional centre in Ondo State following his arraignment over the alleged attempted rape of a 70-year-old woman.
The suspect was brought before a magistrate court in the state after being arrested by police in connection with the incident, which reportedly occurred in a community within Ondo. According to the prosecution, the young man allegedly attempted to force himself on the elderly woman at her residence.
Police told the court that the suspect was apprehended after neighbours reportedly raised an alarm, which attracted residents who intervened and handed him over to security operatives. The victim was said to have sustained minor injuries during the struggle and was later taken for medical attention.
During the court session, the prosecutor informed the magistrate that the offence was punishable under relevant sections of the Criminal Code and requested that the suspect be remanded pending the conclusion of investigations and legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The magistrate ruled that the suspect be remanded at a correctional facility, as the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter fully. The case was adjourned to a later date for further mention.
The incident has generated concern among residents, with community leaders calling for justice and stronger measures to protect vulnerable members of society, especially the elderly.
Sexual violence remains a serious issue in many parts of the country, and law enforcement agencies have continued to urge victims and witnesses to report such crimes promptly to ensure timely action and prosecution.
