Bandits Kill 10 Residents, Torch Homes in Kwara Communities
At least 10 residents have been killed following an attack by suspected bandits on several communities in Kwara State, with dozens of houses reportedly set on fire during the violent raid.
The attack occurred in the early hours of the day when armed men stormed the affected villages, shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee for safety. Eyewitnesses said the assailants moved from house to house, looting valuables before setting buildings ablaze.
Local sources revealed that many villagers were caught unprepared as the attackers arrived on motorcycles and began firing shots into the air, causing panic and chaos. Some residents were killed while trying to escape, while others were reportedly shot inside their homes.
Community leaders said the bandits also destroyed food stores and personal belongings, leaving many families homeless. Several residents sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area after distress calls were made. The police and other security agencies confirmed that a manhunt had been launched to track down the perpetrators. They also assured residents that additional personnel had been sent to prevent further attacks.
A spokesperson for the state government condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. The government promised to work closely with security agencies to bring the attackers to justice and restore peace to the affected communities.
“This senseless killing of innocent citizens will not be tolerated,” the statement said. “We will ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.”
Residents of the affected communities have appealed to the government for increased security presence, saying they now live in fear of another attack. Some displaced families have taken shelter in neighbouring towns, while others are staying with relatives.
The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Kwara State, where rural communities have increasingly become targets of armed groups. Analysts say poor road access and vast forest areas make it easier for bandits to operate and escape.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies as investigations continue.
