Police Rescue 81-Year-Old Pensioner, Arrest Three Suspects in Akwa Ibom Fraud Case
Police operatives in Akwa Ibom State have rescued an 81-year-old pensioner from a suspected fraud syndicate and arrested three suspects believed to be involved in luring victims using diabolical and deceptive means.
According to a statement by the state police command, the elderly man was rescued during a raid carried out by officers following intelligence reports about the activities of a group allegedly targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly elderly citizens.
The police said the suspects were operating a syndicate that specialized in manipulating and deceiving victims under the guise of offering spiritual solutions and financial assistance. Investigations revealed that the group allegedly used charms and psychological tricks to gain the trust of their victims before defrauding them.
The 81-year-old pensioner was reportedly held by the suspects after being lured with promises of financial breakthroughs and supernatural protection. Police said the victim appeared weak and confused when he was rescued and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Items recovered from the suspects during the operation included charms, documents, and other materials believed to have been used to carry out their fraudulent activities. The suspects are currently in police custody and are being interrogated.
A police spokesperson said preliminary investigations showed that the syndicate had defrauded several victims across different parts of the state. Efforts are ongoing to identify other members of the group and locate additional victims.
The police warned members of the public, especially elderly persons, to be cautious of individuals who claim to possess spiritual powers or offer miraculous financial solutions. They advised citizens to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies promptly.
Residents of the area commended the police for the swift response and successful rescue operation, describing it as a relief for the community. Some community leaders called for stronger awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable people from falling prey to such schemes.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
