Police Bust Syndicate Behind Nude Photo Blackmail in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command has dismantled a criminal syndicate allegedly responsible for nude photo blackmail and online extortion targeting victims across Lagos and other parts of the country.
According to police authorities, the suspects were arrested following weeks of intelligence-led investigations triggered by multiple complaints from victims who reported being blackmailed after sharing private images online. The syndicate allegedly lured victims through social media platforms, gaining their trust before persuading them to share explicit photos and videos.
Police said the suspects would later threaten to release the images to family members, friends, or on public platforms unless large sums of money were paid. In several cases, victims reportedly made repeated payments before reporting the incidents to authorities.
The suspects were arrested at different locations within Lagos, where officers recovered mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards, and other digital devices believed to have been used in carrying out the crimes. Preliminary investigations suggest the group operated in an organised manner, with defined roles ranging from online recruitment to financial extortion.
A spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command said the suspects have made confessional statements and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police warned members of the public to be cautious when engaging with strangers online and to avoid sharing sensitive or compromising content.
The command also encouraged victims of online blackmail to come forward, assuring them of confidentiality and support. Police stressed that cybercrime and digital extortion remain punishable offences under Nigerian law.
The bust has been welcomed by residents and advocacy groups, who say nude photo blackmail has become a growing problem, particularly among young people. They called for increased digital literacy and stronger enforcement to curb cyber-related crimes.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling cybercrime and protecting residents from online exploitation, urging the public to promptly report suspicious activities.
