Nigeria Police Successfully Repatriate $23,000 to International Romance Scam Victim
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has successfully repatriated $23,000 to an international victim of an online romance scam, marking another breakthrough in the fight against cyber-enabled fraud.
According to police authorities, the funds were recovered after a detailed investigation carried out by operatives of the NPF’s cybercrime unit. The victim, whose identity and country were not disclosed for security reasons, had been defrauded through an online relationship in which fraudsters gained trust before soliciting money under false pretences.
Police said the suspects used deceptive tactics commonly associated with romance scams, including fake identities and emotional manipulation, to convince the victim to transfer large sums of money. Following a formal complaint and intelligence tracking, investigators traced the transaction trail to accounts linked to the perpetrators.
The recovered sum of $23,000 was formally handed back to the victim through appropriate international channels, in line with legal and diplomatic procedures.
