Onitsha Trader Murdered by Apprentice: Sister Recounts Shocking Midnight Attack
Onitsha, Anambra State — Grief and shock have enveloped residents of Onitsha following the alleged murder of a trader by his teenage apprentice, with the victim’s sister recounting the terrifying moment the attack began.
The deceased, identified as Ikechukwu Nwite, was a trader at the popular Ogbo Ogwu Bridgehead Market in Onitsha, a major commercial hub in Anambra State. The tragic incident reportedly occurred in the Fegge area of Onitsha South Local Government Area in the early hours of Sunday.
Speaking after the incident, the victim’s sister gave a chilling account of how the violence unfolded.
“I was asleep when he hit me,” she said, explaining that she suddenly felt a heavy blow to her head before she could fully grasp what was happening. According to her, the suspect — an 18-year-old apprentice — allegedly launched the attack while members of the household were asleep.
Argument Turns Fatal
Preliminary reports indicate that tension had reportedly been brewing between the trader and his apprentice prior to the incident. Sources within the neighbourhood alleged that the trader had confronted the apprentice over issues relating to conduct, including claims of missing funds and alleged drug use.
The confrontation allegedly escalated, leading to a violent altercation inside the residence. The suspect is said to have used a pestle to strike the trader on the head, inflicting severe injuries. The victim was later confirmed dead.
During the chaos, the trader’s wife was also reportedly attacked but survived. She is said to be receiving medical attention.
Police Confirm Arrest
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. Police sources disclosed that the weapon allegedly used in the attack was recovered at the scene, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further investigation.
Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
Community in Mourning
The killing has sparked outrage and sorrow within the Onitsha trading community, particularly among traders at the Ogbo Ogwu market who described the deceased as hardworking and dedicated to mentoring young apprentices.
Residents say the incident has raised fresh concerns about youth behaviour, drug abuse, and the safety of families who take in young apprentices under the Igbo apprenticeship system — a long-standing economic empowerment model in southeastern Nigeria.
Family members are demanding justice, insisting that those responsible must face the full weight of the law.
