14 Wedding Guests Drown in Kebbi Boat Accident as Vessel Capsizes
Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, Nigeria — At least 14 wedding guests have tragically drowned after the boat carrying them capsized in a fatal accident in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, raising fresh safety concerns about river transport in the region.
The incident occurred at Gumbi village, Gumbi Ward, when the boat ferrying more than 100 passengers — including many people returning from a wedding ceremony — overturned and plunged into the water. The mishap claimed the lives of 14 people, consisting of 13 women and one child.
According to eyewitnesses and local leaders, the group had accompanied a bride to her husband’s home in nearby Gwarzo village, Ngaski LGA, and were traveling back to their homes when the boat capsized.
Search, Rescue, and Aftermath
Rescue efforts were swiftly mounted by local residents and emergency responders, but many passengers were already submerged by the time help reached the site. The recovered bodies were taken to designated mortuaries, and the families were notified.
The Kebbi State Government, represented at the funeral prayer by the Chairman of Yauri Local Government Area, Abubakar Shu’aibu, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and the community. He encouraged those mourning to accept the tragedy in good faith as the will of God, while also offering prayers for the souls of the deceased.
All the victims have now been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, with local elders and religious leaders in attendance.
Community Concerns and Safety Warnings
This latest disaster has drawn renewed attention to the risks associated with river travel in Nigeria, especially in northern states where waterways are frequently used for transport but often lack basic safety measures. Previous accidents on Nigerian rivers have been linked to overcrowding, poor vessel maintenance, strong currents, and limited enforcement of safety regulations.
Residents of Yauri and surrounding communities have urged authorities to step up safety oversight, enforce passenger limits, and provide life vests and safety equipment for boats used on rivers and tributaries. Many noted that river transport, while crucial in areas with poor road infrastructure, must be made safer to prevent recurring tragedies.
State officials have not yet confirmed whether any legal or regulatory action will be taken against the boat operator involved in the incident.
