Laura Ikeji Lagos Business Rent Concerns: Entrepreneur Decries Rising Cost of Commercial Spaces
Businesswoman and influencer Laura Ikeji Kanu has raised concerns over what she described as a sharp increase in the cost of renting business spaces across Lagos State.
In a video shared online, Ikeji Kanu expressed frustration over the escalating prices of shop and office rentals, noting that the trend is putting significant pressure on small and medium-scale entrepreneurs. According to her, some landlords have drastically increased rents, making it difficult for business owners to sustain operations.
She highlighted how rising overhead costs — including rent, electricity, and other operational expenses — are squeezing profit margins for many entrepreneurs. Ikeji Kanu warned that if the trend continues, it could discourage startups and force existing businesses to shut down or relocate.
Lagos, widely regarded as Nigeria’s commercial hub, has seen steady demand for retail and office spaces, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikeja. Property analysts attribute the surge in rental prices to factors including inflation, high demand, currency fluctuations, and the increasing cost of property development.
Her comments have sparked debate online, with many business owners sharing similar experiences and calling for regulatory intervention or more flexible payment structures. Others argue that landlords are also responding to rising maintenance and construction costs.
Economic observers say the situation reflects broader challenges within Nigeria’s urban real estate sector, where commercial property pricing often fluctuates in response to macroeconomic pressures.
As conversations continue, entrepreneurs are urging policymakers to explore measures that could ease the burden on small businesses, which remain a key driver of employment and economic growth in the state.
