Okada rider attacked in Niger State as police arrest suspected motorcycle thief
Police operatives in Niger State have arrested a suspected thief for allegedly attacking a commercial motorcycle rider, popularly known as an Okada rider, with a pestle in an attempt to steal his motorcycle. The incident, which occurred in a community within the state, has raised fresh concerns over attacks on commercial riders by criminals.
According to police sources, the suspect reportedly lured the Okada rider to a secluded area under the guise of requesting a ride to a nearby location. It was gathered that shortly after the motorcycle rider arrived at the spot, the suspect suddenly attacked him with a pestle, aiming to incapacitate him and escape with the motorcycle.
Residents who heard the victim’s cries for help reportedly rushed to the scene and found him lying on the ground with injuries to his head and body. The suspect was said to be attempting to push the motorcycle away when he was overpowered by some youths in the area.
The injured Okada rider was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Hospital sources said the victim sustained injuries but was stable at the time of receiving care.
Police operatives were alerted to the incident and arrived at the scene shortly afterward. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody, while the pestle allegedly used in carrying out the attack was recovered as an exhibit.
A police spokesperson in Niger State confirmed the arrest and said investigations have commenced to determine whether the suspect acted alone or is part of a larger criminal network targeting motorcycle riders.
“The suspect attacked the victim with a pestle in an attempt to steal his motorcycle. Thanks to the swift intervention of members of the public, the suspect was apprehended and handed over to the police,” the spokesperson said.
The police added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. They also warned members of the public, especially commercial motorcycle riders, to be cautious when conveying passengers to isolated areas, particularly at odd hours.
Community members described the incident as frightening, noting that attacks on Okada riders have become more frequent in some parts of the state. A resident said criminals often disguise themselves as passengers before launching attacks on riders in quiet locations.
“This could have ended in death if people did not arrive on time. These criminals pretend to be normal passengers, then suddenly turn violent,” the resident said.
Leaders of the Okada riders’ union in the area also condemned the attack and called for stronger security measures to protect their members. They urged the government and security agencies to increase patrols and surveillance in areas known to be unsafe.
“This is not the first time one of our members has been attacked. We appeal to the authorities to take this seriously and ensure these criminals are dealt with according to the law,” a union official said.
Security experts say commercial motorcycle riders are often targeted by criminals because they operate alone and move through isolated routes. They stressed the need for riders to work in groups where possible and avoid taking passengers to bush paths or unfamiliar locations without alerting others.
The police assured residents that efforts are being intensified to curb robbery and violent attacks across the state. They encouraged members of the public to report suspicious movements and persons to the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, the recovered motorcycle has been returned to the victim, while the suspect remains in detention pending the outcome of investigations. The police also appealed to anyone who may have been a victim of similar attacks by the suspect to come forward with relevant information.
