Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Showtime Moved Up: Here’s the New Start Time
Macy’s adjusted the schedule for its landmark 50th annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, moving the start of the fireworks display earlier than originally planned because of concerns over approaching severe weather in the New York City area. The change was announced on July 4 as officials monitored forecasts calling for thunderstorms that could affect the evening’s celebrations.
Under the revised schedule, the live television special still began at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, but the fireworks display itself was moved forward from its planned 9:25 p.m. ET start to begin earlier in the evening in an effort to finish before the worst of the weather arrived. Organizers urged spectators to arrive early and pay close attention to official announcements throughout the night.
The schedule adjustment came as New York City prepared to host one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in its history, marking both the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 50th edition of Macy’s iconic fireworks show. This year’s event featured more than 85,000 fireworks shells, a large-scale drone and laser display, and launch sites spanning both the Hudson River and East River.
Despite the earlier fireworks schedule, viewers still enjoyed the full two-hour broadcast hosted by actor Terry Crews. The televised special included performances from Post Malone, Noah Kahan, Blake Shelton, Bebe Rexha, Salt-N-Pepa, Shaboozey and Alexia Jayy before and during the fireworks celebration.
Macy’s and city officials emphasized that the schedule change was made out of an abundance of caution. Weather forecasts predicted thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain later in the evening, prompting organizers to prioritize public safety while ensuring spectators could still experience the historic anniversary celebration.
Crowds gathered throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and parts of New Jersey to watch the milestone display. Public viewing areas opened along portions of the FDR Drive and other designated waterfront locations, while thousands more watched from rooftops, parks and boats across New York Harbor.
The fireworks display remained the centerpiece of America’s 250th birthday celebrations in New York City. Organizers incorporated patriotic music, synchronized pyrotechnics and advanced drone technology to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial, making it one of the largest productions in the event’s history.
For viewers unable to attend in person, the celebration aired live nationwide on NBC, streamed simultaneously on Peacock and was also available in Spanish on Telemundo. The broadcast concluded with an encore presentation later in the evening for audiences who missed the live event.
Although weather forced organizers to modify the fireworks timetable, the celebration proceeded with its planned entertainment lineup and spectacular pyrotechnic display. The earlier start helped ensure the event could be completed safely while allowing millions of Americans to enjoy one of the nation’s most cherished Independence Day traditions.
