Wheel of Fortune Announcer Jim Thornton Suspended as Sony Investigates Allegations
Longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended from the popular game show as Sony Pictures Television investigates allegations concerning him.
Sony confirmed the suspension on September 1, saying Thornton would be temporarily replaced while the investigation continues. The studio has not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the allegations against him.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” a Sony Pictures Television spokesperson said. “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”
The development comes after reports of an incident involving Thornton aboard a commercial airline flight in May.
What Happened to Jim Thornton?
According to TMZ, the alleged incident occurred during an American Airlines flight on May 14, 2026.
A fellow passenger reportedly raised concerns about Thornton with a flight attendant. The situation eventually prompted the pilot to contact authorities before the aircraft arrived at Los Angeles International Airport.
Law enforcement officers met Thornton at the gate after the plane landed. He was questioned and subsequently released.
American Airlines confirmed that Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement at LAX following concerns reported by a passenger onboard. The airline did not provide additional details about the complaint.
Importantly, Thornton has not been arrested or charged with a crime in connection with the incident.
His attorney told TMZ that Thornton “did not engage in any illegal conduct” and said officers questioned him for five minutes or less before determining that no wrongdoing had occurred. The attorney also said Thornton was free to leave immediately afterward.
Sony Recasts the Announcer Role
Despite the lack of criminal charges, Sony has decided to suspend Thornton while it conducts its own investigation.
The studio is also recasting the announcer position during the review.
The move temporarily removes a familiar voice from one of television’s longest-running game shows. Thornton has been associated with Wheel of Fortune since 2011, when he succeeded longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell following O’Donnell’s death in 2010.
Thornton has appeared in more than 2,200 episodes of the program and has also served as the announcer for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.
Jim Thornton’s Career
Thornton built a lengthy career in broadcasting before joining Wheel of Fortune.
He has worked in radio and television and is known for his broadcasting work in Los Angeles. His voice has also appeared in several entertainment projects.
His credits include announcing work for The Price Is Right, The Soup and Celebrity Deathmatch. He also contributed voice work to productions including Monsters, Inc. and The Cleveland Show.
Thornton’s role on Wheel of Fortune has generally kept him behind the scenes. However, viewers saw more of him in 2023 when he temporarily switched roles with then-host Pat Sajak for a bonus round after a contestant expressed a desire to meet him.
Thornton Appeared on the Show After Suspension Was Reported
The timing of the suspension also created some confusion for viewers.
Thornton appeared on the September 1 episode of Wheel of Fortune. However, that episode had already been taped before Sony announced his suspension.
His appearance therefore does not indicate that the suspension had been reversed or that the investigation had ended.
For now, Sony has not announced how long Thornton will remain suspended or who will permanently take over the role.
The studio’s investigation remains ongoing. Until more information is released, the exact allegations against Thornton remain unclear.
The situation also remains separate from any criminal case, as Thornton’s attorney has stressed that his client was neither arrested nor charged following the May flight incident.
For Wheel of Fortune viewers, the familiar announcer’s absence represents an unexpected change to a show that has relied on Thornton’s voice for more than 15 years.
