Why Richarlison Rejected Everton Transfer Despite Tottenham Agreement
Richarlison has rejected a return to Everton despite Tottenham Hotspur reportedly reaching an agreement with the Merseyside club for his transfer.
The Brazil international appeared set for an emotional return to the club where he established himself as a Premier League star. However, the move collapsed during the final stages of the transfer window.
Reports indicate that Richarlison’s decision was not because he had fallen out with Everton or lost affection for his former club. Instead, the striker appears to have different plans for the next stage of his career.
Tottenham and Everton Had Reached an Agreement
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham and Everton had agreed a deal for the 29-year-old forward.
Everton were reportedly waiting for Richarlison’s approval before completing the transfer.
The proposed move was closely connected to Tottenham’s pursuit of Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye. Spurs had been working on a deal for Ndiaye, with Richarlison’s move in the opposite direction forming part of the wider transfer plans. (yahoo.com)
However, Manchester City ultimately moved for Ndiaye and completed a deal worth up to £65 million.
That change had major consequences for the rest of the transfer negotiations.
Why Richarlison Rejected Everton
Romano provided an important explanation for Richarlison’s decision.
According to the Italian transfer journalist, Richarlison was not rejecting Everton because he did not want to return to his former club. Instead, he reportedly wanted to explore a different direction in his career.
Romano said the Brazilian was considering options away from continuing in the Premier League.
That helps explain why an agreement between Tottenham and Everton was not enough to complete the transfer. A player still has to agree to the move, and Richarlison ultimately did not give Everton the green light.
The decision is particularly notable because Richarlison enjoyed a successful spell at Everton between 2018 and 2022.
He scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for the club before joining Tottenham for around £60 million.
Richarlison Makes His Position Clear
The situation became increasingly tense after Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi indicated that Richarlison wanted to leave.
Richarlison subsequently addressed his situation on social media.
The forward expressed frustration with how the transfer process had been handled. He also stressed that he had a contract with Tottenham and would remain available to the club if a move could not be completed.
Reports from Brazil said Richarlison felt he had shown loyalty to Tottenham during difficult periods and expected similar respect in return. (uol.com.br)
His comments appeared to confirm that the decision over his future was becoming a personal matter as well as a transfer negotiation.
What Happens to Richarlison Now?
With the Everton move collapsing, Richarlison is expected to remain at Tottenham, at least for now.
That could give him another opportunity to compete for a place under De Zerbi.
His situation at Spurs has been complicated by competition for attacking positions, but his experience could still prove valuable during the season.
Richarlison has also been an important figure during Tottenham’s recent period of transition. He was part of the squad that won the Europa League, ending the club’s long wait for a major trophy.
For Everton, the failed Richarlison transfer is another disappointment in a chaotic transfer window.
The club lost Ndiaye to Manchester City and also saw its proposed deal for Folarin Balogun collapse after complications surrounding the transfer. Everton subsequently explored other attacking options. (thetimes.com)
For Richarlison, however, the immediate priority appears to be finding the right next step rather than simply returning to a familiar club.
His decision means a much-anticipated reunion with Everton will not happen this time.
Instead, the Brazilian remains a Tottenham player, while his long-term future continues to attract attention.
