Downtown Minneapolis Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, Multiple Others Shot Including 2 Officers
A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building left three people dead, including the suspected gunman, while several others were injured Wednesday afternoon.
Two Minneapolis police officers were among those wounded in the shooting at Loring Towers near 15 East Grant Street, close to the Minneapolis Convention Center. A third Minneapolis officer was also injured during the response, according to police.
The incident began shortly after 4:30 p.m. when authorities received a 911 call reporting gunfire inside the high-rise building. Officers arrived within minutes and entered the building as additional gunshots were heard.
Two Victims and Suspect Dead
Minneapolis police later confirmed that two victims had died.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center but later died from their injuries.
The suspected shooter also died. Police have not immediately provided a detailed explanation of how the suspect was killed.
Three Minneapolis police officers were injured in the incident. Two suffered gunshot wounds, while the third officer was injured in another way during the response. All three officers were reported to be in stable condition.
The three deaths therefore include two victims and the suspected shooter.
Seven Patients Taken to Hospital
Hennepin County Medical Center said seven patients were transported to the hospital following the shooting.
The hospital initially confirmed that one of those patients had died. Police later provided additional information about the second victim’s death.
Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the victims or the suspect.
Investigators also continued working to determine what led to the shooting and whether the suspect knew any of the victims.
Police Entered Apartment Building
According to Minneapolis police Sgt. Garrett Parten, officers entered the building about three minutes after the initial 911 call.
Once inside, officers heard additional gunfire and moved toward a higher floor.
Police encountered difficult conditions inside the building, with Parten describing a haze that significantly reduced visibility.
A large law enforcement response followed, with officers from Minneapolis and surrounding agencies converging on the scene.
Residents in the surrounding area were urged to stay away while officers cleared the building and secured the scene.
Videos from the area showed police vehicles, emergency responders and officers carrying rifles positioned around the apartment tower.
Officers Among Those Injured
The shooting immediately raised concerns because two of the wounded victims were Minneapolis police officers.
The officers were taken for medical treatment, and authorities later said they were in stable condition.
The third officer injured during the response was also reported to be stable.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said state officials were assisting local law enforcement and expressed support for the victims and first responders.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said in a statement.
FBI Director Kash Patel also said the federal agency was responding and would provide resources to local authorities.
Investigation Underway
The motive behind the downtown Minneapolis shooting remains unclear.
Police have not publicly identified the suspect or explained what may have triggered the violence.
Witnesses described hearing numerous gunshots inside the building. Some residents said they fled after hearing gunfire and seeing emergency responders arrive.
Investigators are expected to examine the apartment building, interview witnesses and review available surveillance footage as they work to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Authorities have also asked members of the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
The shooting has renewed concern among Minneapolis residents following a violent afternoon that brought a large police and emergency response to the heart of downtown.
As investigators continue their work, officials are expected to release additional information about the victims, the suspect and the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
For now, authorities are urging residents to rely on official updates and give investigators room to complete their work.
