Jared Young Hospitalized After Collision
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was taken to hospital after suffering a frightening head injury during Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Young collided with teammate and pitcher Nolan McLean while both players tried to make a play on a slow ground ball in the sixth inning at Citi Field.
The collision left Young motionless on the field for several moments. McLean’s knee struck Young in the head as the pitcher attempted to get around his teammate while covering first base.
Young was eventually placed on a stretcher and taken from the field for further medical evaluation. He gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as he was carried away.
CT Scan Comes Back Negative
There was an encouraging update after the game.
Mets interim manager Andy Green said Young underwent a CT scan at the hospital and the results were negative. Green also said Young had full use of his extremities.
However, Young was experiencing concussion symptoms following the collision.
Green described the incident as a terrifying moment and said it took Young some time to regain consciousness. The manager added that the early medical information suggested the most serious possible outcomes had been avoided.
Young’s condition remained a major concern for the Mets after the game, although the negative CT scan provided some relief.
McLean Was Shaken by the Incident
McLean was visibly affected by what happened to his teammate.
The pitcher remained in the game long enough to complete the sixth inning, striking out Garrett Stubbs to end the frame. Green then removed him before the seventh inning.
The Mets manager later acknowledged that he probably should not have allowed McLean to continue immediately after the collision.
The incident was difficult for players on both teams to watch. Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor described the scene as frightening and praised the medical staff and paramedics who responded quickly.
Young’s 2026 Season
Young, 31, has become an important part of the Mets lineup this season.
