From Abduction to Military Jail: The Ordeal of Uganda’s Opposition Leader
Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been detained in a military jail in Kampala following his reported abduction in Nairobi, Kenya. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and vocal critic of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, was in Kenya to attend a book launch by Martha Karua, a former Kenyan justice minister, when he disappeared.
He was later found in military detention in Uganda.
His wife, Winnie Byanyima, the head of UNAIDS, has publicly called for his release, emphasizing that he is a civilian and should not be held in a military facility.
This incident has sparked international criticism, raising concerns about human rights violations and the use of cross-border abductions to silence dissenting voices.
The Ugandan police and military have not commented on the matter.
