Brazil Election 2026: Lula Wins Fourth Term in Surprise Victory Over Flávio Bolsonaro
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a historic fourth presidential term after defeating conservative challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested election runoff.
The 80-year-old left-wing leader secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court. Bolsonaro received 48.21 per cent, giving Lula victory after a tense campaign that exposed deep political divisions across the country.
The result marks another major moment in Lula’s long political career. It also extends his leadership of Latin America’s largest economy for another four years.
Lula Wins Fourth Term After Election Comeback
Lula’s victory followed a surprising first round on October 4, when Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of the incumbent president.
The first-round result raised questions about Lula’s political future and gave Bolsonaro’s campaign momentum ahead of the decisive vote.
However, Lula gained additional support during the runoff campaign. His supporters organised large rallies, while his campaign used social media to reach voters and encourage participation.
The final result reversed the first-round outcome. Lula became the first Brazilian presidential candidate since the return to democracy in the 1980s to finish second in the first round and then win the runoff.
Official Results Confirm Lula’s Victory
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court announced Lula’s re-election after votes were counted across the country.
The electoral authority reported that Lula received more than 64.25 million votes, representing 51.79 per cent of valid ballots. Flávio Bolsonaro secured approximately 59.83 million votes, or 48.21 per cent.
More than 128 million voters participated in the runoff, according to the court’s official figures.
The outcome confirms a narrow but clear victory for Lula. However, the election has also triggered a dispute over the final hours of voting and the decision to extend polling in some circumstances.
Flávio Bolsonaro Refuses to Accept Defeat
Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat and said he would seek to have the election annulled.
His objection centres on a decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting by two hours following concerns about public transport and voters’ ability to reach polling stations.
Bolsonaro described the decision as unacceptable and argued that the circumstances surrounding the extension undermined the result.
However, Reuters reported that Bolsonaro’s own campaign had also requested an extension in some areas because of heavy rain. This detail has become central to the dispute surrounding his challenge.
The electoral result remains in place while the legal and political arguments continue. There is no established finding that the voting extension changed the outcome.
Jair Bolsonaro’s Political Movement Suffers Setback
Flávio Bolsonaro’s defeat represents a setback for his family’s political movement.
His father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence following his conviction over a plot to overturn the 2022 election result.
During the campaign, Flávio presented himself as a conservative alternative to Lula and promised a tougher approach to crime and public security.
He also sought closer relations with United States President Donald Trump. The result therefore represents a setback for the Bolsonaro family and its international political allies.
Economic Challenges Await Lula
Lula will begin his fourth term facing significant economic and political challenges.
His campaign highlighted efforts to reduce poverty and inequality, expand social support and protect the Amazon rainforest.
However, Brazil continues to face concerns about public debt, interest rates and household borrowing. Economic growth is also expected to remain moderate.
Lula must additionally work with a Congress containing a strong conservative opposition. That political balance could make it difficult to pass legislation and implement some of his campaign promises.
Brazil Prepares for Another Lula Presidency
Lula’s victory keeps Brazil under left-wing leadership and gives his administration another opportunity to pursue its economic and environmental priorities.
The result also demonstrates that the country remains politically divided, with millions of voters supporting Bolsonaro’s conservative platform.
As the new term approaches, attention will turn to the election challenge, relations between the president and Congress, and the government’s plans for the economy.
For now, the official results confirm that Lula has secured a fourth presidential term, extending one of the most significant political careers in modern Brazilian history.
