Caleb Flynn Murder Verdict: Former American Idol Contestant Found Guilty of Killing Wife
Former American Idol contestant and Ohio pastor Caleb Flynn has been found guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, after a jury rejected his claim that an intruder was responsible for her death.
Flynn, 40, was convicted Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following a trial in Miami County, Ohio. The jury deliberated for about two and a half hours before returning guilty verdicts on the charges against him.
The case involved the February shooting death of Ashley Flynn, 37, a teacher and volleyball coach. Flynn had told police that an intruder entered their Tipp City home and shot his wife.
Caleb Flynn Found Guilty
According to prosecutors, Flynn killed Ashley while she was in bed and then staged the home to make it appear that a burglar had entered the property.
The prosecution presented evidence that it said contradicted Flynn’s account of the night. Investigators examined the alleged point of entry and found that the damage was not consistent with a typical forced break-in.
Prosecutors also presented digital evidence from Flynn’s devices. They argued that the records showed activity around the time he claimed he was asleep.
The murder weapon has not been recovered. However, prosecutors argued that the absence of the gun did not prevent the jury from finding Flynn guilty based on the wider evidence presented during the trial.
Affair Featured During Trial
A major part of the prosecution’s case focused on Flynn’s relationship with Alleigha Botner, a woman with whom he had an affair.
Botner testified during the trial and described an extensive exchange of messages between herself and Flynn. Prosecutors said some of those messages showed that Flynn wanted to end his marriage and discussed harming his wife.
They also highlighted messages sent shortly before Ashley’s death. Prosecutors argued that the messages showed planning and intent.
The defense challenged that interpretation. Flynn’s lawyers argued that the messages did not prove he committed the shooting and emphasized that there was no recovered murder weapon or direct eyewitness evidence placing him as the shooter.
His American Idol Appearance
Before the murder case, Flynn had briefly appeared on American Idol during the show’s 12th season in 2013.
During his audition, he spoke positively about Ashley and said she had encouraged him to pursue his musical ambitions. He received a golden ticket to Hollywood but did not advance far in the competition.
Flynn later worked as a church music pastor and worship leader in Ohio.
His appearance on the popular singing competition has drawn renewed attention following his conviction.
Defense Plans Appeal
Flynn pleaded not guilty throughout the case. His attorneys maintained that prosecutors had not presented enough direct evidence to prove that he was the person who fired the fatal shots.
Following the verdict, defense attorney Patrick Mulligan said the defense was disappointed and expected to file an appeal. He specifically pointed to questions surrounding the prosecution’s evidence of prior calculation and design.
Flynn became emotional as the verdicts were read in court.
The judge revoked his bond and scheduled his sentencing for October 5. He faces the possibility of life imprisonment without parole.
The conviction marks the latest development in a case that attracted national attention because of Flynn’s former television appearance, his position as a pastor and the prosecution’s allegations that the shooting was made to look like a home invasion.
