Chiefs vs Broncos: Kenneth Walker Leads Kansas City Past Denver 31-10
The Kansas City Chiefs opened their 2026 NFL season with a dominant 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
The game marked the return of Patrick Mahomes after the star quarterback missed the end of last season with a serious knee injury. However, it was new Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III who stole much of the spotlight at Arrowhead Stadium.
Walker produced a career-best performance in his Kansas City debut. He rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. He also caught three passes for 18 yards and added another touchdown through the air.
Kenneth Walker Powers the Chiefs Offense
Walker immediately showed why Kansas City signed him after his successful run with the Seattle Seahawks.
His biggest play came in the third quarter. Walker broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run that helped the Chiefs extend their advantage over Denver.
He continued to find space throughout the game and gave Kansas City a powerful option on the ground. His 173 rushing yards were the most of his career.
Walker finished with 191 total yards from scrimmage. That figure was even higher than Denver’s entire offensive output of 176 yards.
The Chiefs finished with 392 total yards, including 220 rushing yards. That strong ground attack allowed the team to control the game and reduce some of the pressure on Mahomes during his return.
Patrick Mahomes Makes Successful Return
Mahomes returned to competitive action nine months after suffering torn ACL and LCL injuries in his left knee.
The quarterback wore a brace but showed no obvious signs that the injury was limiting his movement. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
Mahomes also rushed for 23 yards and scored a 15-yard touchdown during the opening quarter.
His first touchdown of the season came on the ground after Kansas City’s defense created an early opportunity with an interception by rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane.
Mahomes later connected with Rashee Rice for a 13-yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter, he found Walker for a two-yard touchdown pass.
The performance was not perfect, as Mahomes threw one interception. Still, his ability to move around the pocket and make plays with his legs provided an encouraging sign for Kansas City.
Broncos Struggle Against Kansas City
Denver had difficulty maintaining offensive momentum for much of the night.
Quarterback Bo Nix completed 17 of 28 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also lost a fumble as the Chiefs defense consistently pressured him.
Denver’s only touchdown came in the first quarter when Nix connected with tight end Evan Engram for a 19-yard score.
After that, the Broncos managed only a field goal in the third quarter.
Kansas City’s defense finished with two takeaways and limited Denver to just 176 total yards. The Chiefs also controlled possession for more than 33 minutes.
Chiefs Send Early Message in AFC West
The victory gives Kansas City an important opening win against a division rival.
Denver won the AFC West last season and ended the Chiefs’ nine-year run as division champions. Kansas City’s convincing response therefore carried extra meaning.
The Chiefs now begin the season with confidence surrounding both their offense and Mahomes’ recovery.
Walker has also immediately established himself as a major part of the team’s offensive plans.
For Kansas City, the 31-10 win was more than a season-opening victory. It was a strong statement that the Chiefs remain a major force in the AFC.
With Mahomes back on the field and Walker providing a new threat in the running game, Kansas City has plenty of reasons for optimism after Monday night’s impressive performance.
