Ecuadorian police have seized more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine from a truck near the country’s border with Colombia, but the discovery attracted unusual attention after authorities found packages of the drug bearing stickers featuring the face of Norwegian football star Erling Haaland.
Police recovered 469 kilograms, or approximately 1,034 pounds, of cocaine during an anti-narcotics operation on Wednesday. The shipment was discovered hidden inside a false compartment in a truck in Ecuador’s Carchi province, near the Colombian border.
According to authorities, the operation began after police received an anonymous tip early Tuesday morning. Anti-narcotics officers subsequently monitored the Pan-American Highway and identified a truck they considered suspicious.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 370 packages concealed in a specially constructed false bottom.
Police later released video footage showing officers removing the packages from the hidden compartment. The green rectangular bricks were visibly marked with stickers featuring Haaland’s image, creating a bizarre connection between one of football’s biggest stars and a major drug seizure.
Authorities have not suggested that Haaland had any connection to the shipment.
The use of the footballer’s image appears to be connected to a practice used by drug-trafficking organizations to mark shipments. According to reporting by the Associated Press, criminal groups sometimes use the names or images of famous sports figures and other celebrities to identify the organization responsible for a shipment or its intended destination.
Haaland’s image therefore appears to have been used without his involvement or authorization.
The Manchester City and Norway striker has become one of the world’s most recognizable football players. His popularity increased even further following his impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored seven goals across four matches.
That popularity may have made his image attractive to criminal organizations looking for recognizable branding.
Haaland is not the first football superstar whose image has appeared on seized drug packages. Authorities have previously discovered cocaine shipments carrying images associated with Argentine football icon Lionel Messi.
The latest seizure occurred in the Guagua Negro area near the border city of Tulcán, approximately 246 kilometers north of Ecuador’s capital, Quito.
Police said a woman identified only as María R., who was carrying Colombian identification documents, was arrested in connection with the operation. Authorities also reported the arrest of the driver of the truck.
The seized cocaine has a vastly different value depending on where it would have been sold.
Ecuadorian authorities estimated the domestic value of the shipment at nearly $842,000. The same amount could reportedly be worth more than $11 million in the United States and approximately $19.6 million in Europe.
The figures highlight the enormous financial incentive behind international cocaine trafficking.
Ecuador has become an important logistical hub for drug-trafficking organizations operating in South America. Criminal groups use the country’s transportation routes and ports to move cocaine toward international markets.
Authorities say local criminal organizations work with Colombian and Mexican cartels to manage trafficking routes. Much of the cocaine passing through Ecuador originates in neighboring Colombia and Peru.
The country has recorded increasingly large drug seizures in recent years.
Ecuadorian police reported seizing approximately 80 tons of drugs during the first half of 2026. Authorities confiscated nearly 215 tons during 2025 and almost 295 tons in 2024.
The latest operation demonstrates the continuing scale of the challenge facing Ecuadorian law enforcement.
The discovery of Haaland’s image on the cocaine packages also shows how criminal organizations can use unusual branding methods to identify their shipments.
Police have not explained exactly what the Haaland stickers represented in this particular case. It is possible that the image was intended to identify a specific criminal network, destination, customer or production group.
However, authorities have not publicly established the meaning behind the markings.
For Haaland, the bizarre discovery comes at a time when the footballer is enjoying enormous international attention following the World Cup.
His face has appeared on advertisements, football merchandise and social media posts around the world, but the appearance of his likeness on illegal drug packages is an entirely different kind of association.
There is no indication that the footballer was aware of the use of his image before the seizure.
The incident illustrates how recognizable celebrity imagery can find its way into criminal operations without the knowledge or involvement of the people depicted.
For Ecuadorian authorities, the more immediate concern is the nearly half-ton shipment of cocaine that has been removed from circulation.
The investigation is expected to continue as authorities attempt to determine where the shipment originated, who was responsible for transporting it and where it was intended to go.
Investigators will also seek to establish the roles of those arrested in the operation and whether additional suspects or organizations were involved.
The arrests and seizure represent a significant disruption to a trafficking operation, particularly given the international value of the drugs.
The unusual Haaland branding, meanwhile, has added an unexpected element to an otherwise serious anti-drug investigation.
As authorities continue examining the shipment, Haaland remains entirely separate from the criminal operation. His image appears to have been appropriated by traffickers as a label for their illicit cargo.
The Erling Haaland cocaine seizure is therefore less about the football star himself and more about the increasingly creative methods used by organized crime to identify and move illegal drugs.
For police, the discovery provides another example of the challenges involved in combating international cocaine trafficking.
