EFCC Detains El‑Rufai Amid ₦432bn Corruption Probe in Abuja
Abuja, Nigeria — The Nasir El‑Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has reportedly been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after honouring an invitation for questioning, sources say, in connection with a ₦432 billion corruption investigation linked to his tenure in office.
According to reports, El‑Rufai arrived at the anti‑graft agency’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on Monday morning and underwent prolonged questioning over alleged financial misconduct during his 2015–2023 administration. After hours of interrogation, he was placed in custody to allow investigators more time to probe the matter.
Allegations and Investigation
The EFCC probe reportedly stems from a 2024 investigative report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which alleged irregularities involving state loans, contract awards, and financial transactions totalling about ₦423–₦432 billion. The committee recommended prosecution for alleged abuse of office, contract violations and money laundering.
Additional claims under review include alleged surveillance of a senior government official’s communications, which has drawn separate scrutiny from security agencies. El‑Rufai has denied any wrongdoing, describing the probe as politically motivated.
Custody and Legal Process
Sources indicate that the former governor will spend additional nights in EFCC custody while investigators complete their inquiries. Nigerian anti‑graft law allows extended detention or remand applications to ensure thorough questioning in serious cases.
The matter has already sparked protests, with some supporters gathering outside the EFCC premises and calling for transparency in the process. Authorities have not yet detailed when formal charges may be filed or if El‑Rufai will be arraigned in court.
