Flydubai Co-Pilot Axe Attack: UAE Official Reveals Details of Assault on Captain
A shocking aviation incident has emerged after a United Arab Emirates official revealed that a Flydubai co-pilot attacked the aircraft’s captain with a crash axe during a flight from Dubai to Israel.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, involved Flydubai flight FZ1073. The aircraft was carrying 174 passengers when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit and attempted to seize control of the plane.
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi described the incident as an attempted terrorist act. He said investigators had uncovered evidence that the co-pilot used a crash axe to assault the captain and interfere with the aircraft’s flight controls.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to establish the suspect’s motives and determine whether other individuals were involved.
Co-Pilot Attacked Captain Inside Cockpit
According to the UAE prosecutor general, the co-pilot launched the attack while the aircraft was flying toward Tel Aviv, Israel.
The suspect allegedly used a crash axe, an emergency tool normally stored inside an aircraft cockpit, to strike the captain.
The attack reportedly left the captain seriously injured and created a dangerous situation aboard the aircraft.
Investigators said the co-pilot also attempted to take control of the plane’s flight controls. The aircraft subsequently experienced a dangerous loss of altitude, raising fears of a possible crash.
The UAE authorities have described the incident as an attempted terrorist attack. However, investigators have not yet released their final findings about the suspect’s intentions.
Passengers and Crew Helped Prevent Disaster
The situation could have ended in tragedy if other people aboard the aircraft had not intervened.
Despite suffering serious injuries, the captain reportedly managed to open the cockpit door and allow others to enter.
Passengers and crew members rushed to help overpower the co-pilot and prevent further interference with the aircraft’s controls.
A reserve pilot and other trained personnel aboard the flight also played important roles in stabilising the aircraft.
The plane eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where emergency services and security personnel were available to respond.
The successful landing prevented a potentially devastating outcome for the passengers and crew.
Captain Receives Medical Treatment
The captain, identified in media reports as Smit Machchhar, was taken to the United Arab Emirates for medical treatment following the incident.
The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that the pilot was recovering well while receiving medical care.
Machchhar also spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the frightening experience.
During the conversation, the captain described how he fought to survive the attack while recognising the responsibility he had to protect everyone aboard the aircraft.
His actions have attracted widespread attention, with passengers, aviation observers and officials praising the crew’s response.
Questions Emerge About Co-Pilot’s Background
The incident has also raised questions about the co-pilot’s employment history and the security procedures used by airlines.
Media reports have identified the suspect as an Omani national named Hammam al-Hammami.
Sources cited by international news organisations said he had previously been restricted from flying in Oman following concerns about alleged extremist views.
Reports also indicated that he later worked with Flydubai after undergoing training and employment assessments.
However, the full details of his background and the airline’s recruitment procedures remain under investigation.
Authorities have not yet established a definitive motive for the alleged attack.
UAE Leads Investigation Into Flydubai Incident
The UAE is leading the investigation into the incident, with authorities examining physical evidence, digital records and witness statements.
Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said investigators would establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and examine any possible connections.
Flydubai has also confirmed that it is cooperating with the relevant authorities.
The airline previously praised its crew members and thanked passengers who assisted during the emergency.
The investigation is expected to provide further details about how the incident unfolded and whether additional security measures may be necessary.
For now, the Flydubai co-pilot axe attack has raised serious questions about cockpit safety, airline recruitment procedures and the protection of passengers during international flights.
