Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has declared that he can end banditry within two months if granted full control over security operations in the state. He made this bold statement while addressing stakeholders on the persistent insecurity plaguing Zamfara and other parts of the North-West.
The governor explained that the major challenge facing the fight against banditry is the lack of autonomy for state governments in handling security matters. According to him, the current system leaves governors as “chief security officers” in name only, without the actual powers to command security agencies.
Governor Lawal stated that with direct authority over the military, police, and other security operatives, he would deploy a comprehensive strategy capable of restoring peace within two months. He stressed that insecurity has crippled farming, business activities, and education in Zamfara, and a decisive approach is urgently needed.
The governor further appealed to the Federal Government to consider reforms that would grant states greater control in the fight against terrorism and banditry. He added that such reforms would not only benefit Zamfara but also strengthen national security.
