Iran War: Ukraine to Help Defend Against Iranian Drones in Middle East After US Request, Zelensky Confirms
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has approved a request from the United States for Ukraine to assist in defending against Iranian drone attacks in the Middle East, marking a new phase of international cooperation as tensions escalate in the region.
According to statements from Ukrainian officials, the request came from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump as American forces and regional allies face increasing threats from Iranian-made attack drones.
Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine has been asked to provide specific support to counter Iranian-designed “Shahed” drones that have reportedly been used in attacks across several Middle Eastern locations.
In response, the Ukrainian president said he had already instructed military authorities to deploy the “necessary means” and ensure that Ukrainian specialists are available to help strengthen defenses against the drones.
“We received a request from the United States for specific support in protection against Shahed drones in the Middle East region,” Zelensky said, adding that Ukrainian experts would assist in guaranteeing the required level of security.
Iranian-made Shahed drones have become a significant weapon in modern warfare due to their relatively low cost and ability to strike targets from long distances. The same type of drones has been widely used by Russia during its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, giving Kyiv extensive experience in developing countermeasures.
Over the past four years of conflict with Russia, Ukraine has built advanced capabilities for detecting and intercepting the drones. Ukrainian forces have developed affordable interceptor drones, mobile defense units, and electronic warfare techniques designed to neutralize incoming aerial threats.
Because of this battlefield experience, several countries in the Middle East and Western allies have begun looking to Ukraine for expertise in defending against the same technology.
Officials say the Ukrainian assistance may include sharing tactical knowledge, deploying trained specialists, and possibly providing equipment designed specifically to intercept drone attacks.
The request comes as the Middle East experiences a sharp escalation in hostilities involving Iran and its adversaries. Iranian drones and missiles have reportedly been launched against multiple targets in the region, including military bases and infrastructure.
Security analysts note that traditional air-defense systems such as the U.S.-made Patriot missiles are extremely expensive and not always effective against large numbers of small drones. Ukraine’s methods, which focus on lower-cost interception techniques, have therefore attracted international attention.
The cooperation also reflects the growing role Ukraine is playing in global security partnerships despite its ongoing war with Russia.
However, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s support would not come at the expense of its own defense capabilities. The country continues to face daily drone and missile attacks as part of the war with Russia, making air-defense resources critical for its own security.
Ukrainian officials have indicated that any assistance provided abroad must be balanced carefully to ensure the country maintains adequate defenses at home.
The development also highlights increasing military collaboration between Ukraine and Western allies as geopolitical conflicts intersect across regions.
Analysts say the decision could strengthen diplomatic ties between Kyiv and Washington while showcasing Ukraine’s technological advancements in drone warfare.
At the same time, some observers warn that expanding military cooperation in multiple conflict zones could complicate already tense global relations.
As the Middle East crisis continues to evolve, Ukrainian experts are expected to coordinate closely with U.S. forces and regional partners to develop strategies for countering Iranian drone threats.
For now, Zelensky maintains that Ukraine’s involvement is aimed at protecting lives and supporting allies while continuing its own fight for national security.
The request follows ongoing chaos involving Iran, whose drone technology has been connected to attacks across the region as well as in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Ukraine has itself been under frequent drone bombardments, with attacks targeting residential areas, civilians infrastructure, and energy facilities across Ukrainian territory.
