Lagos chieftaincy party electrocution
A tragic accident occurred at a chieftaincy celebration in the Idimu area of Alimosho, Lagos State, where three party guests and a motor boy were electrocuted. The incident took place during a jubilant ceremony marking a man’s coronation anniversary with a newly conferred traditional title. As part of the festivities, large canopies were erected across Anjorin Street to shelter attendees.
According to eyewitnesses, the electrocution happened when some guests and a truck occupant tried to lift a canopy to allow a sand-laden truck to pass through the road. While lifting the metal frame of the canopy, they did not notice a bare electric cable on the ground. One of the partygoers said that the metal structure made contact with the exposed live wire and shocked all four individuals instantly.
The motor boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was declared dead at the scene. The three guests survived and were rushed to a hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Panic spread quickly, bringing the joyful celebration to a sudden and horrifying end.
As news spread in the community, residents expressed shock and sadness over the needless loss of life. The remains of the motor boy have since been handed over to his family for burial. Meanwhile, people are calling for better safety measures at public gatherings—especially those using temporary structures near power lines—to prevent similar tragedies.
