man jailed eight years fakes disability to steal from health workers
A man in Zimbabwe has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of stealing from health workers while pretending to be disabled. The convict, identified as 38-year-old Benjamin Mutambanengwe, carried out a series of thefts in Chitungwiza, where he faked disability by using crutches to gain sympathy and easy access to medical facilities. His actions targeted doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who were unsuspecting of his deceit.
According to court findings, Mutambanengwe posed as a patient on several occasions, entering hospitals and clinics with the help of crutches. Once inside, he would exploit the kindness of health workers and the confusion of busy hospital environments to steal valuables such as laptops, mobile phones, and personal items. On one occasion, he sneaked into a doctor’s office and made away with a laptop, while on another visit, he took a mobile phone from the reception area.
Security footage and witness testimonies revealed that the suspect used the same method in multiple facilities, appearing vulnerable to avoid suspicion. His repeated offenses drew the attention of law enforcement, leading to his eventual arrest and prosecution. During the trial before Magistrate Blessing Mafukidze, the court found him guilty of eight counts of theft under aggravating circumstances.
The prosecutor described Mutambanengwe’s actions as cruel and manipulative, emphasizing that he took advantage of the compassion of those dedicated to saving lives. The court imposed a strict eight-year prison sentence, stating that his conduct was deliberate and harmful to society.
The case has raised concerns about the safety and security of medical professionals and public facilities. Many citizens have called for stricter visitor screening and improved security within hospitals to prevent similar incidents in the future. Authorities have also urged healthcare centers to remain vigilant when dealing with individuals who might exploit kindness for criminal gain.
