Massive Train Wreck Near Madrid Kills 24, Hundreds Injured
Madrid, Spain — A major railway disaster shocked Spain on Wednesday after two high-speed trains bound for Madrid derailed within minutes of each other, killing at least 24 people and injuring hundreds, according to regional authorities. Rescue teams continue to work through mangled metal and overturned carriages in a desperate effort to reach dozens still believed to be trapped.
The derailments occurred near a busy junction outside the city of Guadalajara, along one of Spain’s most frequently traveled high-speed corridors. Witnesses described hearing a loud screech followed by a violent crash that sent dust and debris into the air.
“It felt like the ground exploded,” said a passenger who managed to crawl out of a shattered window. “People were screaming, seats were torn from the floor, and everything was shaking”.
Authorities say the first train derailed at approximately 4:15 p.m. local time, causing several of its rear carriages to tip onto their sides. Minutes later, a second high-speed train approaching the same area struck debris from the first derailment, causing additional carriages to leave the tracks.

Officials said that many victims suffered fractures, spinal injuries, deep cuts, and trauma from violent impact. Helicopters hovered over the site, transporting the most critically injured.
The regional emergency services director described the situation as “one of the worst rail disasters in recent Spanish history,” warning that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the initial derailment. Early speculation points to the possibility of mechanical failure, track damage, or excessive speed, but officials cautioned that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Spain’s Minister of Transport said a full investigation has been launched, promising transparency as officials examine black-box data from both trains, track maintenance logs, and eyewitness accounts.
“Right now, our priority is saving lives,” the minister said. “The investigation will come, but families are suffering, and that is where our focus must remain.”
Passengers who survived recounted chaotic scenes in the seconds following the derailment. Some said luggage flew through the air, lights went out, and people were tossed violently between seats.
One survivor described helping a child trapped under a collapsed luggage rack. “He was crying, calling for his mother. We couldn’t find her,” he said.
Another passenger said she had been asleep when the train “suddenly jumped,” waking her to darkness and a thick cloud of smoke.
As news of the crash spread, families gathered at hospitals and emergency centers seeking information about missing loved ones. Authorities opened a hotline and set up a reunification center near Madrid.
Volunteers and local residents arrived with water, blankets, and phone chargers for displaced passengers.
Spain’s Prime Minister declared three days of national mourning, calling the crash “a heartbreaking tragedy for our nation.” Flags across government buildings will be flown at half-mast.
