My Life in Grave Danger Over Viral Video on Killing of Christians — Plateau Cleric, Evangelist Dachomo
A Plateau-based cleric, Evangelist Gideon Dachomo, has raised alarm that his life is in serious danger following the circulation of a viral video in which he commented on the killing of Christians in parts of northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday in Jos, the evangelist alleged that powerful individuals and groups had been threatening him since the video gained national attention. He claimed that his comments — made during a church event — were taken out of context and used to incite hostility against him.
“I Am Being Targeted for Speaking the Truth”
According to Dachomo, the viral video was originally a call for peace and justice, urging the government to protect all citizens regardless of religion. However, he said that some persons had edited and shared excerpts of the footage on social media to portray him as instigating religious violence.
“I never called for violence or hatred against anyone. I only spoke about the need to stop the killings of Christians and ensure that justice prevails,” Dachomo said.
“Since that video went viral, I have received multiple threats to my life. Strange vehicles have been trailing me, and unknown callers have been warning me to stop speaking out.”
The cleric added that he had reported the threats to security agencies and appealed to the Plateau State Government and federal authorities to ensure his protection.
Calls for Calm and Understanding
Evangelist Dachomo urged his supporters and members of the Christian community to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions, emphasizing that his message was rooted in peaceful advocacy.
“This is not the time for division. My concern is for every innocent life being lost, whether Christian or Muslim. Violence benefits no one,” he said.
He also appealed to social media users to verify information before sharing, warning that misleading edits of sensitive religious messages could worsen tensions in already fragile communities.
Plateau’s History of Religious Tension
Plateau State has experienced recurring inter-communal and religious clashes, particularly between farmers and herders, leading to loss of lives and property. Security agencies have frequently cautioned against hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric that could aggravate the situation.
The Police Command in Plateau confirmed receiving reports of threats to Dachomo’s life, adding that investigations are ongoing.
“We are aware of the viral video and the alleged threats. The matter is under investigation, and security measures are being taken to ensure his safety,” a police spokesperson stated.
Clergy Associations React
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau State Chapter, expressed concern over the development, calling for peaceful dialogue and protection of religious leaders who speak out against injustice.
“Evangelist Dachomo has the right to express concern over killings, but such messages should always promote unity. We also urge authorities to guarantee his safety,” CAN stated.
