Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has inspected the ongoing production of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopters and fighter jets at Leonardo Aerospace Manufacturing Plant in Italy, as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s aerial defence capacity.
During the inspection visit, Badaru, accompanied by senior NAF officials and Nigerian defence representatives, assessed the progress of aircraft manufacturing, testing, and assembly processes. The visit forms part of the government’s strategic partnership with international defence contractors to enhance local air power and modernize the military’s operational fleet.
“We are committed to ensuring that our Air Force is adequately equipped to tackle emerging security threats across all regions of the country,” the minister stated. “The aircraft under production will significantly boost Nigeria’s aerial surveillance, precision strike, and counterterrorism capabilities.”
Strengthening military modernization
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the inspection covered several advanced aircraft models, including light attack helicopters and multi-role fighter jets specially configured for Nigerian terrain and mission requirements.
Officials of Leonardo Aerospace assured the Nigerian delegation that all aircraft would be delivered within the agreed timeline, emphasizing that Nigerian engineers and pilots were actively participating in the production and training phases to ensure technology transfer and self-reliance.
Badaru noted that the collaboration reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s armed forces and improving national security through technology-driven defence solutions.
Boost to national security
The newly acquired air assets are expected to play a crucial role in combating terrorism, banditry, and oil theft, while also enhancing reconnaissance and rescue missions.
The Defence Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to accountability and operational efficiency in military procurement, stressing that every investment must translate into improved safety for citizens and frontline troops.
