Nigerian Navy homegrown technology national security
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has called for a deliberate shift towards homegrown technology solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
Speaking at a naval innovation forum in Abuja, Ogalla stressed that reliance on foreign technology makes the country vulnerable, especially in the face of evolving threats such as terrorism, piracy, cyberattacks, and oil theft.
“We must prioritize indigenous research, shipbuilding, and defense technologies. This is the only sustainable path to securing our maritime and national assets,” the Navy chief stated.
He noted that the Nigerian Navy has already begun local shipbuilding projects and is partnering with universities and research institutes to enhance domestic capacity in defense technology.
Security analysts have welcomed the call, arguing that investing in homegrown innovations will not only reduce costs but also create jobs and deepen Nigeria’s industrial base.
The CNS also urged private sector collaboration, highlighting the need for public-private partnerships to drive innovation in surveillance, intelligence, and maritime defense.
