Nigerian professors poor pay debts
Nigerian university professors have raised concerns over poor remuneration, lamenting that many of them are trapped in debts due to the high cost of living and inadequate pay packages.
Speaking under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), some professors revealed that despite years of service and academic contributions, their salaries remain insufficient to meet basic needs.
“Professors in this country earn far below what their colleagues earn elsewhere in Africa. Many of us are in debt, unable to cope with the economic realities,” one senior lecturer said.
The academics highlighted that rising inflation, spiraling food prices, and increasing electricity tariffs have worsened their financial struggles. They warned that unless the government urgently reviews the salary structure for university staff, the nation risks losing its brightest scholars to brain drain.
Education advocates argue that the welfare of professors is directly linked to the quality of research and learning in Nigerian universities. They call for policy reforms that will improve funding for tertiary education and prioritize the dignity of academic labour.
