The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has expressed disappointment over what he described as the growing distraction of Nigerian politicians who, he said, have abandoned their responsibilities in pursuit of political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Barely two years into this administration, many leaders have already shifted attention from governance to the next election cycle,” the Obi said. “Our people need development, not endless political scheming. Governance should not stop because of ambition.”

The monarch urged political officeholders to refocus their energy on addressing pressing national challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and poverty, rather than prioritizing electoral strategies.
He noted that governance is a sacred responsibility and should not be treated as a stepping stone to personal advancement or political survival.
“True leadership is measured by service, not by how soon one starts preparing for another election,” he added. “Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders who understand this distinction.”
